Servas is a world wide network of hosts and travellers in over 130 countries. As a peace organisation, it aims to promote international understanding through personal contacts and exchange of ideas. Hosts offer an ‘open door’ so that, for a short time, travellers can look beyond the tourist façade to join in the daily life of their hosts. There is no exchange of money between hosts and travellers.
Each country has a list of hosts, regularly updated, so that Servas members who want to travel can visit hosts in other countries and also in their own country. A visit normally lasts two nights.
Who becomes a member?
Some Servas members belong to peace groups, others offer a commitment to peace in less formal ways, but all share a wish for a more tolerant and peaceful world. The spirit of Servas is that people are accepted as travellers and hosts regardless of their race, religion, or culture. Hosts and travellers are of all ages, single and families, and from all backgrounds. Members can be travellers or hosts, or both at the same time, and must be over 18 to travel or host independently.
Servas Britain interviews all hosts and travellers before they become members.
Servas Britain is a voluntary organisation and limited company, run by its members.
